Luis Fitch stands proud today as he reflects on his pivotal role in shaping the new Great Seal and Flag of the State of Minnesota. Appointed as the Chair of the State Emblems Redesign Commission, Fitch spearheaded the collaborative effort that culminated in unveiling these iconic symbols, which have now been officially adopted by the state.
The new emblems, approved by the State Emblems Redesign Commission in 2023 and officially recognized by Minnesota statutes, encapsulate the essence of the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Drawing inspiration from original designs submitted by Minnesotans, the seal and flag prominently feature symbols such as the North Star and the state’s picturesque waterways.
“It is a tremendous honor to have led this commission and played a part in crafting these symbols that represent the very soul of Minnesota,” said Fitch. “The collaborative process and the recognition from the National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion Award underscore the significance of our collective effort.”
The unveiling ceremony, held on May 11, marked a historic moment for Minnesota. For the first time, the new state flag was raised over the Minnesota State Capitol. The new state seal was unveiled alongside the flag, solidifying their place as enduring emblems of Minnesota’s identity.
Fitch recognizes the weight of responsibility that comes with this honor. These symbols will serve as timeless reminders of Minnesota’s rich history and vibrant culture.
